Bees choose a queen based on her pheromone signals and the quality of the eggs she lays. When a queen becomes weak or dies, the worker bees will begin to raise a new queen by feeding certain larvae a special substance called royal jelly, which triggers the development of a queen. The first queen to emerge will typically fight off any other potential queens.
